I wanted to create a thread to share what books you are currently reading, have recently read or what's on your list to read. Please feel free to rate, review or make recommendations.
I am currently reading:
The Active Side of Infinity by Carlos Castenada
Here's a
link to a page with some quotes from the book (haven't watched the viddy, so I can't say anything about it).
Recent reads are:
Dr. Mary's Monkey by Edward T. Haslam
Here's a
link to what I think is a useful review of the book.
The Shack by William P. Young
This book revisits the question of God and suffering. While it doesn't approach matters from a Gnostic perspective, there are some elements which are compatible.
Birthday by Koji Suzuki
I highly recommend this book. It was the basis for the Ring movie (Ringu). The book consists of three connected stories and, of course, differs significantly from the movie. What surprised me most about this particular read was the Gnostic elements within the story. Anyone familiar with Philip K. Dick's Divine Invasion or Ubik will notice definite similarities. I came across this book immediately after reading them and was jarred by how well it lined up with them. As far as I know, Mr. Suzuki has no connections or interest in Gnosticism--and yet we have this lovely parable.
The Rape of Nanjing by Iris Chang
Warning: This is truly horrific material. Before looking into anything concerning the Japanese occupation of Nanjing or the atrocities of Unit 731, please understand that you are reading about hell on earth, a time and place where ordinary men became sadistic serial killers.
That's all I've got for now. Gettin' sleepy. I'll post some other recent reads and maybe some recommends later. Please share what you've got. I've noticed, personally, that a lot of what I reads fits together into a larger picture--even when I am not picking a book for a specific reason. I'm only posting the books that, for me, have followed that strange internal thread of mine and have some connection, even if only a slight one, to Gnosticism.
